Colombia's five largest cities are Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, and Cartagena (listed in order of population from highest to lowest). The largest city, Bogotá, has a population of 7,632,746.
Demonstration of the Rank-Size Rule
According to the Rank-Size rule, the following cities should have a population of:
Medellín - 3,816,373 Cali - 2,544,249 Barranquilla - 1,908,187 Cartagena - 1,526,550 |
The actual population of the following cities is:
Medellín - 2,453,255 Cali - 2,305,737 Barranquilla - 1,144,441 Cartagena - 957,400 |
The rank-size rule has low validity due to it's inaccuracy in predicting most of the largest cities' population in Colombia. Albeit Cali's (3rd largest) population being predicted relatively on-point, the rest of the predictions were much too high for the true value of the cities' population.
