Colombia removed from human rights 'blacklist'
Colombia has been formally removed out of the Inter-American Human Rights Commission's(IACHR) annual report that blacklisted Colombia for their lack of human rights for 12 years. After over a decade of struggles - from being criticized for their handling in dismantling illegal armed groups, weak legal processes, and impunity for executions by the military - the President of Colombia celebrated and states that he is proud of the progress Colombia has made in the past years. The action by the IACHR is only temporary until a final decision can be reached in 2014, but it is still a sign of improvement for the Colombians.
I feel like this act is a symbol of the movement for human rights across the world. In the more technologically advanced world that we live in today, various inhumane acts are generally frowned upon by society. It is much easier to spread and invoke a revolution due to the different social media sites - such as Facebook and Twitter. This makes the gathering of peoples that share a unite interest, especially in improving human rights, much less arduous. Cultures all around the globe are incredibly evolving - or devolving as some few might say - into a more humane lifestyle. The generation of racism and separation is still seen in today's world, but it is much less than it was centuries ago.
Decades of struggles between human rights activists and its opposition has generally gone in favor of the activists. This case is present in Colombia, and the impact of the IACHR on the Colombian and its government will be felt for generations. Great strides have been taken to improve the culture and traditional values in the country. Life for many Colombians will significantly improve in terms of their rights as a human being!
