Burkina Faso: Polls Opens in Burkina Faso Legislative Elections
Over 6,000 candidates in Burkina Faso are competing for 127 Parliament seats with more than 4 million voters being registered to vote in Burkina Faso. However, these are the first elections since 2011 when a crisis erupted in an attempt to overthrow a military administration - Compaore - that has been in charge since 1987. Although, the attempted revolution does not diminish President Compaore and his administration from being the favorites in the upcoming election because of the division between the revolution's representatives.
This is a good trend I am observing. Political leaders that once had a stronghold on its people due to their military might or economic status are falling or getting weaker all over the world. Many countries are following the path of the United States in the mid-late 18th century. Revolutions, although, not always successful lead to change inevitably. I feel that even if Compaore and his administration do not get forced out of office, the culture in Burkina Faso will be changed. People will not feel as oppressed as they once did.
Elections will greatly affect Burkina Faso's culture because the government and its activities that have been occurring for over two decades will start to be challenged by the people. Violence is also becoming more apparent in Burkina Faso due to the peoples' unhappiness with the government. The present generation of civilians will experience great violence and uprising as their parents are fighting to topple Blaise Compaore's government.
